Max Heinrichs, Principal, and Diana Holub, counselor, discuss the transition of Hillsboro Kansas High School from a mainly traditional high school, to a very robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) environment. In the midst of declining enrollment, budget cuts and outside competition, Max and Diana have lead the transition of Hillsboro High School to a small rural high school that offers 20 career pathways.
Their’s is a remarkable story of creativity and innovation that is sure to impress and inspire high school principals and counselors across the country. While reducing staff and core curriculum sections they have figured out how to increase the career opportunities for every student.
The national movement to prepare students through career and technical education (CTE) programs has created significant logistical and education problems for small rural schools. Hillsboro High School has solved many of those problems. One of the key solutions has been to inlist the core curriculum faculty in teaching career and technical education approved classes in their are of expertise.
